- If you believe in knowledge acquisition, then my advice to you is to get yourself noticed. The Durmand Priory has eyes everywhere, and they'll spot you when you're ripe. It's all about seasoning. Go spice yourself up, and don't call us; we'll call you.
- Spice. Right. Thanks.
- I always thought this would be a prime position, but it's so very dangerous out here. The Priory never told me it would be like this.
- What are you looking for out here?
- You never should have come here.
- Poor little human!
- We're searching for artifacts from the time of Adelbern's kingdom. There were much valuable knowledge lost that day. With luck, we'll reclaim this lost slice of history.
- Adelbern?
- You may be right. I never expected that the ghosts of our ancestors would attack us as well. As much as I respect the Priory's work here, I'm going to request a transfer to a different dig.
- What are you doing here, besides whining?
- The ghosts are mad at everyone, right?
- I think you should. Good day.
- Don't be insulting. You're not out here fighting off the ghosts of your ancestors. Besides, truth be told, Adelbern would never had done what he did if your ancestors hadn't been killing everyone in sight.
- We were taking back our land!
- Humans. I'm tired of your excuses and tired of this conversation.
- Your land? I think not. It had been our land for long enough to build the city of Ascalon and for our people to settle the land. As far as I'm concerned, that makes it ours.
- And now you're out here scavenging graves?
- You're wrong. I'm done talking to you.
- Surely, you know about how the old king went mad and turned everybody in Ascalon City into ghosts? It was a black day for all of Tyria.
- Now I know. Thanks.
- Actually, based on my friend's research, they believe we're charr. They can't see beyond the moment of their death, and so as far as they can tell, we're all the invading charr army. It's quite distressing when you think about it. Can you imagine? Living your last day for all of eternity? Over and over?
- It's horrifying. Horrifying.
- They're at it again! Those harpies are stealing supplies right out from under our noses. Don't just stand there. Get mad!
- I guess I'll help.
- Rawr! Harpies, here I come!
- Get out of my face! I can't kill harpies and talk to you at the same time!
- No need to yell!
- Welcome to the outskirts of Ascalon City. I'd suggest you familiarize yourself with killing ghosts, and soon.
- What are you out here for?
- I'm familiar, but what are you doing here with humans?
- I'll go do that then.
- Digging for bones and pottery chips. The Priory wants to collect whatever Ascalonian detritus they can. It's about preserving history. This place has been a nexus of drama. Fortunately, the Foefire destroyed much of the evidence. Sadly, we still have to search.
- Makes sense. Good luck with that.
- Trust me, I'm not happy about it either. Joining the Priory means always being willing to do their dirty work. Their research comes before all.
- What do they have you doing?
- Watch your back. Bye.
- Ah, hello. I have to say, joining the Durmand Priory takes you to the most interesting places. Have you come to learn what life in Ascalon was like before the Foefire? That's why I'm here. We're making real progress.
- The Foefire?
- You can't ever get it back. That's idiotic.
- I have more important things to do. Good-bye.
- Surely you've heard of it? Oh, maybe your teachers don't mention it. Well, hundreds of years ago, Ascalon's King Adelbern unleashed the energy in his magical sword. He was protecting his people from an invading army. It's okay, though. That's all in the past.
- That is terrible. I'm leaving.
- Maybe, just maybe, we'll make something better. You and your people can be a part of the solution or part of the problem. Way I figure it, if we understand what treasures we lost in the Foefire, maybe we'll never do anything so stupid again.
- What do you know about the Foefire?
- I've got my eye on you, mouse.
- Terrifyingly so. My people lost everything. Now, we've got Divinity's Reach, but even it doesn't live up to the legends of Old Ascalon. My goal in life is to resurrect that legend. It may have to live on in museums, but at least our children won't completely forget.
- Follow your bliss.
- They call it the Foefire. That energy blasted everything within sight of Ascalon. Basically, my people all died and became ghosts. Everyone else just died.
- That seems like a steep price to repel an invader.
- Cold. I'm glad I wasn't born yet.
