- Better than expected, but she has much to learn. The Dream gave her many challenges to overcome. We're starting with weapon and armor care.
- You're a good mentor to her. The Dream gave her a gift when it showed her the way to you.
- I heard you're leaving soon.
- Yes. My thoughts have turned northward. I must follow the call. I'm needed there.
- I'll miss you. You've been invaluable to me and to our fight.
- What's the matter?
- I received a missive from an old friend, someone I knew from the Grove. He is joining the Vigil.
- A worthy organization. I commend his choice.
- I've known him all three years of my life, and in that time, he's never expressed a desire to leave the Grove. I guess things change.
- I've considered the Vigil myself. Sometimes, I think it would be nice having someone else making my decisions for me.
- You'd be quickly miserable. I think you're too much of a Dusk bloom to never question orders.
- Before I left the Grove, I heard about an organization that follows and swallows secrets. I was intrigued.
- I've heard rumors, whispers really, of just such an organization. You haven't gone in search of it?
- No, not yet. Though, lately, it's been foremost in my mind.
- I looked all over for you! Where were you?
- Around.
- I never know where you go or what you do. Your Night tendencies drive me crazy. One of these days, I'm going to follow you.
- You can try.
- I've been talking to the leader here, and it looks like I might get a diplomatic position. I'll be sent out to make contact with other races.
- I can imagine no one as well suited.
- I am thrilled! It's like I was made for it.
- No one would ever confuse you with a night bloom.
- I have some fresh nectar. What do you say we celebrate? I'll share.
- You have my attention.
- Why would the Pale Tree bring us into the horrible world? There's so much suffering here.
- You sound angry.
- Perhaps I am. Many mornings I rise from my bed with dread in my heart. I wonder who will die today, and it kills me a little inside.
- The world and the Dream are under attack. All warriors must join together to push back the darkness.
- But, sleeping...sleeping was painless.
- Then assume it will be painless again, when your time comes.
- I throw myself into each battle, hoping that it'll be my last. To date, I've known only victory...and disappointment.
- Then your goal is flawed.
- Humans spend the first fifth of their lives ignorant and vulnerable. They rely on their keepers for everything.
- What purpose does that serve?
- It does seem like a waste of fifteen good years, doesn't it.
- Have you ever known one of us to die of natural causes?
- What's unnatural? It's fairly natural to die if your head is separated from your body.
- Good point.
- What I want to know is how long we would live if we managed to avoid all killing blows. Are we immortal?
- Let's hope we live long enough to find out.
- I'm not looking forward to death. Do you think we return to the Dream?
- Our souls are inextricably tied to the Dream. It would surprise me if we didn't. But no one really knows for sure.
- I had a nightmare the other night, and it's been bothering me ever since.
- You keep reliving it in your mind?
- Not only that, but I'm worried that I may have been touched by nightmare. Do you think I'm vulnerable?
- I think we all are.
- In my dream, I was being chased by thorn hounds with great gaping maws an—and bloody paws.
- Brambles! What happened?
- Caithe leapt down from a tree, and the hounds turned into newborn members of Destiny's Edge—baby Rytlock, Logan, Zojja, and Eir all in diapers. It was quite disturbing.
- (laugh) Nightmare definitely has a grip on you.
