- I didn't mean to mat your fur. But when you've been around as long as me, everyone looks like a cub.
- Whatever the imbeciles outside the city have broken, I'll fix...and make my name doing so.
- I lost track somewhere after ninety. What difference does it make? I'm younger than dirt and older than you.
- You must have seen a lot in all that time.
- Ahn, I've got no time to entertain cubs right now. I have important things to do.
- What are you doing that's so important?
- Then I'll leave you to your important tasks. So long.
- That's none of your business, now is it? Didn't I say to show some respect? I swear, you cubs these days. If only I were...bah, I'm tired of you.
- I have unpleasant memories of tedium and frustration associated with this realm. The Halloween decorations add a bit of color, but even this holiday is dull compared to the Mad King's festivals.
- Hello. I'm Ilaria Hammersteel, official Iron Legion historian. My orders are to share the officially sanctioned history of the Foefire with all who pass by.
- I never get tired of hearing that story. Fire away.
- I don't have time to hear it right now. Good-bye
- Very good! The events leading up to the Foefire can be traced back hundreds of years, to the first war between charr and humans.
- The first war?
- For generations, humans drove us further and further from our homelands. The endless setbacks divided the legions. Flame shamans took advantage of the chaos and slowly assumed power.
- What did the shamans do once they were in control?
- The shamans claimed that the only way to defeat the humans was to worship their fire gods. When we did, the tide of the war turned, and we began reclaiming the land the humans had plundered.
- The human king, Adelbern, stubbornly refused to surrender. We drove the humans back into Ascalon City. For thirty years they cowered inside as they held the walls. Until the day came when they fell.
- What did the humans do?
- The desperate, mad king used treacherous magic—the Foefire—to slaughter the charr. His spell also transformed the Ascalonians into a ghastly army of ghosts. Those ghosts hold the city walls to this day.
- Are you resigned to this fate?
- No. Someday, we'll find a way to defeat Adelbern and the ghosts of Ascalon. And then, we'll finally reclaim all of our rightful land.
- I'm certain all here in Tyria anxiously await that day. Good-bye.
- Scarlet designed it to keep running on purpose. She didn't want it to stop, even if she was captured or killed.
- There's no obvious way to shut down the drill. Someone with more engineering knowledge will have to figure it out.
- I'll lead the masses through metamorphosis to an improved future.
- They're just below us on the outer wall. Three turrets loaded with special anti-ectoplasmic charges to repel the ghosts from the Nolani Academy ruins.
- By studying the Eternal Alchemy, we can see that all things are connected.
- If you have the time, take the descender down to the Ghostblast platform and pop a few ghosts.
- Thanks for the tip.
- Ain't it a rush? Anything I can do for you?
- What did you do before you joined his court?
- I'm Remus Hordeblaster, retired artillery. I was with the Iron Legion for a dozen campaigns, until my paws started cramping up.
- How long have you been retired?
- It'll be fifteen years next Season of the Zephyr. But my cub's serving here in the citadel so I still hang around the place.
- Got a cub in the legion, eh? Which warband?
- None. He's with the Adamant Guard. Of course, that means he doesn't have time to talk to his old sire anymore. Mister Too-Big-For-His-Jerkin.
- Could be worse. He could be a gladium. So long.
- Where do you think you're going? This descender is for authorized personnel only.
- Where does this descender go?
- Who can I see about getting authorization?
- I can imagine.
- Down to the Ghostblast Battery platform. But it's off-limits while they're test-firing the turrets.
- What's the Ghostblast Battery?
- Grab those kegs. Block those points.
- I'll check back some other time.
- An array of our long-barreled ghost toasters. Used to be our main defense against the ghosts from the old Nolani Academy.
- "Used to be"? Have the ghosts stopped coming?
- When will they be finished with the test-firing?
- I may come back when the tests are over. Good-bye.
