- You've seen the Rin ruins, haven't you?
- No. I thought the Searing burned it all down.
- I guess some things never die.
- Hey, I know you. You fought in the arena last night!
- That's right. I'm a merchant by day, but I'm a champ in the Bane.
- Dealing with customers makes you want to hit things, eh?
- No, I just want to be more than a merchant.
- Hello. What can I do for you?
- Do you have time to answer a question or two?
- I'm just passing through. Thanks.
- It would be my pleasure. Though I don't know what I can offer you. I can talk about myself if you'd like. Or I could recount the glorious legend of Kalla Scorchrazor.
- Why don't you tell me about yourself?
- I'd like to hear about Kalla Scorchrazor.
- Actually, I've run out of things to talk about.
- Excellent. Well, what would you like to know?
- Who are you, and what do you do?
- I've changed my mind. Tell me what you know of Kalla.
- Actually, that's all I needed to know.
- Kalla Scorchrazor was a great charr heroine. She led our original overthrow of the Flame Legion, restored the other legions to glory, and opened many doors for female soldiers in our society.
- She defeated the Flame Legion?
- How did she open charr society to females?
- With the aid of other female soldiers who had been training in secret, she led the legions to victory on the Plains of Golghein. That battle signified the end for the shaman caste.
- Then why is the Flame Legion still around today?
- During the dark times under the shamans, females were forbidden to fight or even train for battle. Kalla defied this order, training her sisters in secret at great personal risk.
- Were they ever tested in battle?
- I'm Salinus Warbreaker. As a diplomat, I was one of the negotiators of the treaty between the legions and the human kingdom.
- That must have been a difficult assignment.
- Was, and still is. The negotiations are ongoing. There are still a few contentious issues to be resolved. However, my part in them is over.
- And what about Kalla Scorchrazor?
- The few survivors fled to the Citadel near Hrangmer. Two hundred years later, their current leader, Gaheron Baelfire, seeks to become a new god and rule over all the legions once more.
- All right. Good-bye.
- Vitus Godslayer, mercenary. Speak. Fast.
- "Godslayer"? Isn't that a bit presumptuous?
- You're a mercenary?
- No. Good-bye.
- All goals are presumptuous until you accomplish them. And I will be the one to kill Gaheron Baelfire.
- Do you have a plan to go with that goal?
- MONSTER ONLY Quaggan Pirate Spear
- Of course. Either I will kill him, or he will kill me. Either way, I won't have to keep living in fear of a berserker like Baelfire.
- I'll pass.
- I am. Although, at the moment I'm not taking any contracts. I'm gathering intelligence on Gaheron Baelfire. He's my next target.
- Did someone hire you to take him down, or is this a vendetta?
- Both. I drew up the mission for personal reasons, but it wasn't hard to find eager backers. And my name will be remembered alongside the heroes of old.
- Maybe. But I don't recall the heroes of old needing sponsors.
- Yes. I guess I never really considered that one of us might be killed.
- Magic fuels this device, and there doesn't appear to be any way to shut it down.
- Dynamics krewes thrive on permutation. We're always advancing. Morphing into something new.
- I'm the lever, and my excellent krewe is the fulcrum. Together, we will move the world. We will force reason from chaos.
- I've just been informed that defective golems—not mine, of course—are causing havoc out in the jungle.
- Seen a lot, but done even more. I've got stories that would raise every hair on your hide.
