- All we know is that the Sinister Triad abandoned the fort a few days ago. When we arrived, we found vines all over the interior. We're still investigating.
- I'll keep an eye out for clues.
- We're still working out the details. It looks like the Sinister Triad abandoned the fort in a hurry. No information on the asura gate out front, either.
- What was that about an asura gate?
- The nectar is delicious and delivers a surprising urge to drop everything and go for a run.
- We took Fort Vandal after the Sinister Triad hastily abandoned it. According to the notes they left behind, it seems some Mordrem vines chased them out.
- Leave.
- I see. Thanks.
- The Triad destroyed it before they left. We have no idea where it went or if it worked. Rata Sum's sent in a scientist, but with no record of a gate here, they're just as stumped as us.
- Speak quickly—I've an Inquest mess to attend to.
- What Inquest mess?
- I'll let you get back to work.
- Fort Vandal's last residents, the Sinister Triad, had their Inquest engineers construct an asura gate here, which they destroyed during their evacuation. I'm here to find out where it went...if it even worked.
- What do you mean?
- Good luck.
- When an asura gate is functional, it gives off a distinct electromagnetic frequency. All gate frequencies are monitored in Rata Sum. However, no such frequency ever existed at this fort.
- Strange. Thanks for the information.
- What is it? This gate isn't going to reverse engineer itself.
- There was an asura gate here?
- Asura gates are defined by exceptionally strict criterion. This was an Inquest attempt at an asura gate. I'm here to ascertain whether or not it was fully operational.
- What have you learned so far?
- It appears once capable of powering up, which means it should have released a gate-specific frequency. This gate, however, was silent. Its destination point is also nonexistent—a technological impossibility.
- Watch where you step. Something odd is afoot.
- I don't know if I can take you seriously after that pun.
- All right.
- Coo! Quaggan is so excited! Not only is quaggan a pirate, quaggan is a pirate captain! Quaggan is so lucky quaggan can't believe it!
- What are you going to do now?
- Why did you want to be a pirate?
- Accidental, I swear! You really ought to watch yourself. Something here caused the Triad to vacate Fort Vandal. Good for us, maybe. Unless what scared them off was worse.
- Quaggan spent most of quaggan's life being afraid. Now, quaggan in charge! Quaggan's strong! Quaggan has friends! And all of quaggan's friends will be nice. Coo!
- So, what's your next move, captain?
- What are you thinking?
- Oho! Good question. Quaggan hadn't thought beyond making the pirates be nice. Maybe the pirates have ideas.
- The fort was abandoned so fast the Triad hardly had time to collect their notes. Vines were scattered all over. Place looked an awful lot like what happened at Fort Salma and Concordia.
- So you think Mordremoth has attacked, or will attack, this fort?
- Maybe it started to. But whatever it was interested in is gone now. Either way, step lightly. Seraph are on their way to secure the fort.
- Why, you look distinctly non-Seraph. Good. I was getting tired of the endless view of Mister and Missus Turnkey over there.
- What are you doing here?
- Oh, am I blocking your view? My bad.
- I love this part. The anticipation of the explosion is what makes the blast itself so sweet and tasty. Onward!
- I'm with you every step of the way.
- Taking a little holiday. Got a great rate on this room.
- Soon we'll be sending that bone ship down in a mighty conflagration. When we're old and gray, our grand-progeny will still be talking about this fireworks show!
- No, really.
- Just catching up on my sleep. Really.
- Nice work on those towers. Not sure how you can work with that yammering asura, though. If he weren't so good with explosives, I'd have gutted him long ago.
- Easy there, soldier. Tonn's my partner.
- Fine. Enjoy your holiday.
- Someone's scribbled a map on this paper. Circles and notes mark areas of strange activity around Vandal's Claim.
