- Is Lion's Arch taking over the Fractals project?
- What do you think of Dessa?
- I'm ready. Let's get started.
- Dessa doesn't remember us. Based on what we saw with her former krewemates in there, I'd say there's something very wrong going on here.
- What do you mean?
- Will the core-sample data we acquired help?
- Agreed.
- I have my suspicions. The Consortium controls access to the Fractals, so as far as I'm concerned, the entire project is suspect.
- But the Consortium doesn't run the Fractals facility.
- Can you remind me what we're doing here?
- True, but I have to assume they still have a stake in it. Historically, those greedy vermin are always up to something. Keeping an eye on them has become second nature to me.
- Do you really think they caused the Thaumanova disaster?
- Understood.
- No, but I know for a fact they'll exploit it if they get the chance. I'm going to make sure they never do. But the first step is to find out exactly what happened.
- It had devastating environmental and magical impacts that no one understands. Also, Magnus and Levvi agreed that the other asura on the Council would support it, and I was trying to win an election.
- No. Well, not yet. Many on the Council have never been comfortable with how it's being run. If I can establish a strong reason to do so, we can take steps to exercise more control over it.
- Dessa said—and we saw—how people can't be taken out of a Fractal, and we can't get her out of this facility. I'm starting to wonder if the Mistlock Observatory is just another slice of the Mists.
- But wouldn't that mean that Dessa is...
- Let's review. What's got you concerned?
- Possibly. There's so much about the Mists we don't yet understand.
- Let's not speculate about that here. I need bigger brains than mine to work this out, so I want to check in with Levvi and my other contacts in the Arch.
- She doesn't seem shady, but as my friend Levvi says, asura keep secrets. It's one of the only ways to protect their valuable ideas. And then there's the Fractals' Consortium connection...
- It should. Once our experts in Lion's Arch have a chance to review it, it should tell us a lot about the reactor and how its purpose evolved from harnessing chaos energy to studying dragon energy.
- Scarlet mentioned channels of energy crisscrossing the globe.
- I've heard my friend Levvi talk about such things. The theory is that magic flows and cycles like blood through a circulatory system, or rivers running to the ocean. It's a dynamic, living system.
- What would applying that theory here mean for us?
- If the Thaumanova krewes identified those channels, it's a major breakthrough. It could redefine our understanding of how magic functions, or even help us understand the Elder Dragons' life cycles.
- Then congratulations are in order, Captain. You delivered on your promise.
- Dessa sure is dedicated. Suspiciously so. I mean, did you see her face when I told her I'd haul her in?
- She looked like her whole world was ending. I'll never understand how the Consortium inspires such loyalty.
- But it means we can't trust her. I'm staying behind to make sure no one fiddles with the machinery once we're underway.
- Sorry to abandon you, but Magnus made it clear: the Arch can't afford to lose any more councillors.
- However, if I understand it right, I can monitor you once you're in. I'll be in touch every step of the way.
- And I promise you as a member of the Captain's Council: do this for me, and it'll absolutely be worth your while.
- All right, you're in. And it seems you're Inquest. Dessa says it's not unusual, but—
- It isn't. If you were qualified, you'd know gross corporeal reassignment is a potential side effect of Fractal insertion.
- Fascinating. But according to the schematics, the reactor core is nearby. We need to access the console and take a sample.
- Very well. With random monsters teleporting in, and off-the-charts energy readings, I advise making a shortcut.
- There should be explosive units nearby. Use one to breach the wall and you'll have much easier access.
- You're in. And, apparently, you're Inquest. Don't let that throw you, though. You're still basically you.
- If you're looking into the cause of this disaster, you'll need a reactor-core sample.
- What are you doing? This entire place is about to go up in a blinding flash of chaos magic.
- Chaos magic? That's not what the special consultant says. You don't have any idea what's really going on here, do you?
- No, but I know that things were fine until your precious "special consultant" came along.
- I also know we're dead if we don't get out of here with as much valuable data as we can carry.
- Did the krewe chief say that, or did the consultant? I'm not sure whose orders to follow anymore.
- Does it matter? There's a hundred ways we can die here. The only way we live is to do our jobs and get out.
- Leave me. I'm saturated with chaos magic. I won't make it out alive, and my corpse will be dangerously toxic.
- There's got to be a way. We've been through too much together for me to just leave you to die.
