- She and I, along with a human named Dougal Keane, a charr known as Ember Doomforge, and an asura called Kranxx tried to cross the Brand. Killeen...didn't survive. I've missed her every day since.
- I'll pay my respects with you.
- I'm sorry for your loss. Good-bye.
- I'd like that, friend. And I think she would as well.
- You stand quietly with the norn at the foot of Killeen's memorial. After a minute, you depart in a respectful silence.
- You're new to Varimhold. If you meet with any trouble, talk with one of the guards here. They're trained to keep this place secure.
- Are you a Sentinel?
- Many of us here are. We're making sure the Brand doesn't spread any further. I'd like to think we're on the cusp of victory. It's either that or certain death.
- I know the feeling.
- Transporting supplies to Varimhold is a challenge, especially with all of the delicate instruments the scientists need. It's worth the hassle if they can do something about the Dragonbrand.
- I can't wait to get back out on patrol. Just need my head to stop spinning.
- You look roughed up. What happened?
- Intoxicated while on duty? Shameful!
- It's a head wound. Besides, some of my best war stories happened after I'd had a few. Like the time I mistook a sleeping ogre for my bunk. Man, did that make a mess.
- Good luck out there.
- We were bringing in supplies when a Branded human made a run on the gates. I vaulted off a marmox and took it down. Turns out crystal creatures don't break your fall very well.
- I'm sure you'll be back out there in no time.
- This gate is closed for the security of Ebonhawke. I can't let anyone pass without orders from Captain Samuelsson or Queen Jennah herself.
- No going through the gate. Got it.
- I'm tired of hearing people howl day and night about the truce talks. As long as I get to continue perfecting my machines, I could care less about diplomacy and pieces of paper.
- What about the dragons, then?
- That's one way to look at it.
- When someone draws up a good strategy on how to kill them, I'll build something that'll get the job done. Until then I'm just going to take care of what's in front of me.
- I'm calibrating mortars that'll protect the Delegation of the Legions perimeter. I can't get the things to fire right. They're supposed to blow up Renegades, not just blow up.
- It looks to have been struck by lightning.
- Nothing like a shot of charr whiskey in your ale to give it that extra kick. I pick up a few barrels every couple of months for my pub back home.
- Thanks for the tip, I guess.
- It galls me that this is our last watchpost out here. The war, the Dragonbrand, the ogres, and now the truce. Everything's being taken from us. Our leaders better know what they're doing.
- I hope they do, too.
- Just as plants need sunlight, machines need energy. When working with metals, you can take energy from wind, water, and fire. You engage all the rules of nature, and make something amazing with them.

- Tell me about Ember Doomforge.
- Tell me about Kalla Scorchrazor.
- Is this how you spend all of your time?
- You must have some tales of your own. Tell me about yourself.
- I prefer to learn by experience. Good-bye.
- A couple years back, me and another member of my warband were trapped in the Dragonbrand. We had no food, one sword each, and a length of rope. And it was getting dark.
- The scout was carrying a coded notebook. Many pages are ripped out, but the last entry reads, "The Inquest control the Risen!"
- That's amazing. Do you have time to tell me another?
- She and a bunch of other adventurers retrieved the Claw of the Khan-Ur from the wreckage of Ascalon. Without her, they never would have made it through that army of ghosts.
- Tell me about the Claw.
- Do you have time to tell me another?
- That's amazing. Thanks.
- You think I'm retired? Ha! If I stopped fighting and working not even a cub would want to hear what I have to say. I fight, but I also share some of what I know with the next generation.
- Can you tell me one of your tales?
- Almost 300 years ago, the charr shamans ruled over their race, preaching that the gods of fire made them stronger than all others. Meanwhile, the titans were watching and controlling the shamans.
- Didn't anyone suspect the shamans back then?
- Of course. What story would you like to hear?
- Tell me about Ember.
- Tell me about Kalla.
