The titan's spawn—referred to as "shards" by a few of the locals—act in a subservient fashion in favor of their progenitor. One of my research assistants has hypothesized that they are no different than white blood cells inside the body, mindlessly reacting to the progenitor titan's needs. They attack threats to the body. They attempt to seal the body's wounds. When one is killed, the primary specimen releases another.
